Joan

I have a friend at work. Hard to believe I know. To keep his identity safe, I'll just call him John. Jon...I mean John is a pretty neat guy. He builds bikes and is a Professional Engineer and has beautiful blond hair that goes down to the middle of his back. He attended BYU although he is hesitant to admit it and he loves Lesbians but not in an inappropriate way, in a totally non-sexual way. He beats to his own drum but that drum is pretty cool. He is an enigma wrapped up in a Robert-Oh's taco shell.

So John has long flowing blond locks. He dressed up as a cheerleader for Halloween and it was awesome. He really looked a little too good to be honest. I am glad I did not see him from a distance and think he was a girl and then realize it was him, I don't know if our friendship could withstand something like that.

The other day, and to set the scene, John and I sit side by side in cubicles right as you walk in our office door. We will often get a straggler that comes in looking for a bathroom or directions. So an older couple comes in the other day and John's cube is first and they approach his cube and his back is to them as he works away on his computer. Can you guess what is coming next? So the old dude drops a "madam" on John. Actually, I think it was an "excuse me madam, where is the .......". Not even a Ma'am or Miss but a full on Madam. The guy did not seem to care about the gender confusion but his wife was mortified. Oh man, it was one of the funniest things that has happened in a long time that did not happen directly to me.

To be honest I was not there when this went down but there was a witness and I still think it is so funny. I thought about it while I was running and laughed out loud. Around the office we drop a few "Excuse me Madam"s here and there throughout the day and it was just a great event I will never forget.

They don't make Eagle Scout Projects like they used to

I am very distressed about the state of Boy Scout Eagle projects. There was a time when painting a park bench for the third time was considered unworthy of an ESP. I am not a fan of scouting, don't get me wrong. I really don't care that much. Camping and hiking is pretty fun but it was hard for me to care about scouting as a youngster. We had good leaders all the way. As a leader myself? Forget about it. I'll stick with the Elders Quorum.

But one thing I am proud of is my ESP. I had a lot of help and it probably was not my idea, but I was there every step of the way and most of the time I remember just me and my dad.

My father grew up until his early teens in a place called Beryl, Utah. It is eastern Iron County, mostly farm land then and now. When his father died his whole family moved to the big city, St George, where they went to school and started adult life. My dad told me the other day if he would have been a few years older he would have stayed and ran the farm after his dad died in 1964 but his mom felt he was too young then, I think he was about 14. He was the oldest in the family. If he would have stayed, can you imagine me in Beryl, Utah? I'm no city slicker but that would be crazy. If you like The Cure in Beryl you don't last too long.

So my grandfather Scott died way before I was born and my dad had a brother that died as an infant and they are both buried in the Newcastle, Utah cemetery.

So someone, probably my dad, had the idea that this cemetery needed a flag. My dad and I went and got all the proper authorizations, got an old 60 foot light pole from SG city, cut the pole in the middle and bonded the pole to make it shorter, attached all the pulleys and balls on it, painted it, and then took it to Newcastle and installed it. We poured the slab and threw it in and it is still there to this day. I have not seen it for a few years, I should run up there with the family, but I ask about it all the time. That was 1986.

I am proud of that. Like I said, I did not do it all but I was there. I am proud of that project and I hope it will be there for decades to come. Back in the good ole days when Eagle Projects were something to be proud of and we walked to and from school uphill both ways.

You've got to be Tweeting me!

Because I have totally flamed out of the Blogosphere I have decided to jump on the next big thing, Twitter of course. Everything comes to Utah 3 years later so I'm going to jump on the Twitter bandwagon so I can jump off when all the stay-at-home moms get on.

I think tweeting will be more my speed anyway. It looks funny on The Soup. I am more of a one-liner kind of guy. So if you are interested, go to:

https://twitter.com/sndscott

You can "follow" me there via cell phone and probably email or something.
